Euthynnus affinis

Known as “the little tuna”, this pelagic fish belongs to the family of fish that includes mackerels, tunas and bonitos. In Sydney, you’ll find them close to shore in large migratory schools.

The Mackerel Tuna has a noticeable dark-striped pattern on its back with a few dark spots. You’ll see them in schools mixing with other fish – adding to spectacular background on our dives.

Quick facts on the mackerel tuna

• Mackerel tuna feed on crustaceans, squids, plankton, small fish like herrings, pilchards and silversides.
• You’ll find them on the menu for swordfish and other billfish and sharks.
• They are popular with anglers as a light-tackle gamefish.
• They are not particularly great for the dinner table as their dark flesh deteriorates quickly.
