Flathead
Platycephalus conatus
Think of the flathead as an elongated flounder – greenish to purple to grey on the back and white tones on the belly. Many are found in rivers, but the ones we encounter on our dives are of the deep-water variety.
Flatheads are a large predatory fish with a wide, flat body with two eyes on top of their flat head, which gives the flathead great vision on the fish traffic above it – a very efficient way to keep an eye on dinner as it comes to you.

- Flatheads are delicious and great in fish and chips.
- They live up to 15 to 20 years (females live longer and are larger than males.)
- Flatheads will reach up to 95cm and 4kg
- Prey includes small fish, squid, mollusc and crustaceans.
