Heterodontus galeatus

A harmless bottom dweller, the Crested Horn Shark resembles the Port Jackson Shark. Both types of (nearly identical) sharks are found in significant numbers along the eastern coast of Australia.

Crested Horn Sharks are on the smaller side. They top out at 70cm in length (females are slightly larger than males when they reach maturity). They pose no danger to humans and thanks to their docile nature will stick around long enough for divers to take a decent picture or selfie!

Crested Horn Sharks – Quick Facts

Crested Horn Sharks give birth to live young in black spiral eggs that they attach using their mouth to soft corals, kelp, etc, using the eggs long spindrils that extend from the eggs end.

The spindrils help identify the Crested Horn Shark eggs from those of the Port Jackson Shark eggs which don’t have them.

• Crested Horn Sharks are found in shallow inshore waters up to 90m in depth.
• Crested Horn Sharks feed on small fish, mollusc and crustaceans.
