An amazing Sydney wreck off Mona Vale
This wreck was found by Jason Miles and Les Rochester after several weeks of wreck hunting with the operator of the Aquarius dive in 1989. The wreck lies in an area offshore of the Mona Vale headland in 51 metres of water, surrounded by sand. We could not find any information about this wreck and that’s why the three of us agreed to call it the ‘Trio’.
Schools of fish on display at this Sydney wreck
The wreck is a Hopper Barge with a LOA of around 50 metres, the wreck is fully intact, has some hull plating deterioration around the midships area. The wreck has good marine life on and around the wreck, with many school’s of kingfish, yakkas or whiting commonly encountered, with Port Jackson and wobbegong sharks found in the hold. When first found it had a concrete yacht in its hold, which has since completely disintegrated, leaving only a small engine block.
Enjoy the soft corals and sponges
The power plant room is very hard to enter for divers now using twins but was accessible when we dived on single aluminium tanks via the stairwell accessed via the top deck hatch. Like many of the Hopper Barges there is a raised rectangle skylight above the power plant room. The bow has good sized, colourful Soft Coral’s and Sponge’s growing around the large anchor winch, other growth can be seen along the upper deck on both the port and starboard decking.
There is a fair amount of structure around the stern including a small wheelhouse. A number of years ago another Hopper Barge was located only 120 metres away from the Trio, this may have been due to both vessels being towed together, this wreck was named the Danny J and is another great wreck Sydney technical wreck scuba divers dive, with good visibility and mild currents encountered on both the Danny J and Trio wrecks.
