Blue Groper

Achoerodus viridis

A brightly coloured blue wrasse (it’s not really a groper), the Blue Groper can reach up to 1.40m and 40kg. Not surprisingly it is a prized by fishermen as it makes for a spectacular trophy and a delicious meal, but it is protected from spear-fishers due to its friendly, inquisitive demeanour.

  • Groper are one of three colours: blue, green or brown. Their sex can be easily identified by these colours.

  • Gropers will change sex if the dominate Groper is removed from the area.
